The Damper breed gives you a fat tailed, well muscled animal. With its natural hardiness arising from the Damara-Dorper progeny that it has been bred from.
It is a very vesatile breed. From our mating of this breed we have 100% conception and believe that from scanning results that many are going to be multiple births. As young animals after 90 days they weighted between 35 -43 kilograms giving an average weight of over 39 kilograms. These results came from early summer which usually in this environment does not favour good lambs.
We are very pleased with the ongoing result and the weight gain of both the ewes and rams. The carcass of a smaller ewe that we killed gave us great confirmation. It was extremely good eating with a juicy flavoursome meat. The sheep have a natural herding, which they have achieved through the Damara breed.
We see them as being able to be used as a pure breed giving more confirmation to the fat tailed breeds and also able to be used in a crossing situation, which can produce high bred vigour in breeds of similar characteristics. We believe that this will be very much one of the hair breeds of the future.
