The Damara is a pure bred fat tail sheep which is very sought after in the Middle East and in associated Muslim markets (as an entire ram). As the fat ail is the preferred meat of the Muslim people, we can expect to see the breed take its place in many supermarkets and butchershops throughout Australia. With the low fat content of the meat, it is anticipated that it will also make its way onto the plates of European consumers.

The main market for the breed will definitely be the live boat trade to the Middle East which, with the recent opening of the Saudi Arabian market, looks to be very strong for several years to come.

The Stud

The Damara breed was first introduced to Australia by SAABCO and Wescorp International in 1996. It was from the arrival of these first embryos in Australia that the stud was formed. From the early days, the backbone of the Damara industry in Australia was developed.

The first ever Damara cross rams were sent from Australia to the Middle East with Al Makarish coming from this stud in 1998. It was with this first sale that we realised that the Damara has a bright future in this market.
