Breed Characteristics

The Damara Breed has many fine characteristics however one of the most incredible is the breed's herding habit. Through this natural instinct forms the basis of its survival with the protection of young from predators.

The Damara is an extremely hardy breed which in good times, stores fat in its tail. During dry periods the tail becomes a backup energy source.

The Damara is a non selective grazier and when observed in pastoral area, can be seen to be feeding on all grass and bushes. The meat of the Damara is of low fat, juicy and flavoursome and of a fine grain texture. It is a meat meat much sought after by the Muslim marketplace.

The Damara is a fertile breed and the ewes have been observed mating at 7 months of age when their body weight has been right. The ram, whose expected working life is 9 years or more, is also very fertile and can be used in a flock at 1%. A hair sheep, the Damara will not require shearing and sheds its hairy coat.

In pastoral conditions when it will not require drenching the Damara lends itself to a chemical-free meat which is becoming more in demand around the world.
